In India, banana leaves have been chosen across ages for their auspicious value. Considered the ideal spread for serving deities and holy personas alike, the Mahaprasad of Lord Jagannath is offered on a banana leaf, traditionally regarded as a golden plate. The tradition of patra bhojana (patra=leaf,
bhojana=meal) tells us that all life was created on the left of the universe and destroyed on the right. Ancient sages have therefore decreed that the banana leaf must always be positioned with its tip on the left and base on the right of the diner. Naivedya, food of the Gods, is offered to the deities on a banana leaf as it is believed that its tip emits fountain-shaped sattvik or positive energy waves.
